Meet the Collaborative
HIMARC includes partners from academic institutions, government organizations, non-profit organizations, and indigenous and local community groups who come together to co-create and interpret data products, ultimately increasing their uptake for management
Who makes up HIMARC?
The mission, goals, and programs of HIMARC are carried out by the ʻOhana, the collective group of scientists, managers, and stakeholders working to monitor and regulate nearshore ecosystems in Hawaiʻi. Our mission is made possible by consistent communication and collaboration among our diverse ʻOhana. A Steering Committee made up of representatives from the ʻOhana ensure projects align with the mission, make decisions on data sharing, and provide guidance.
Day-to-day leadership, calibration, analysis, and communication is carried out by HIMARC’s core team.
The Calibration Team, led by Megan Donahue and Jake Ferguson with assistance from Laura Jiminez, Mary Donovan, and Callie Stephenson, carries out statistical calibration of datasets.

The HIMARC dataset, though broad, represents only one way of knowing about reef ecosystems in Hawaiʻi. We lean on community knowledge and our broader ʻOhana to help tell the most holistic story about the condition of our coral reefs.
Across Hawai‘i we are working with community groups to tailor our data products in a way that informs place-based management activities, exchanging ideas and working on creation and interpretation of these products collaboratively together. Likewise, our work is improved by the community’s deep understanding of place.
